Twelve Boxer puppies, 18 hours after rescue
Chris and Mariesa already share their home with a pack of big dogs. Then they meet Storie, a pregnant Boxer in a county kennel, and Mariesa sits right down on the floor with her. more
Chris stays on the bench and runs the math. He thinks about everything they have coming up and whether there is any way to make it work. Mariesa has a simpler answer. "Let's save the dog," she says, as Chris tells it. "That's why we're here."
SaveSo they take her. At the vet, an x-ray shows exactly how big a yes that was. There are 12 tiny puppy skulls on it.
They bring Storie home and set her up in the kennel outside, bed and all. The idea is to spend a couple of quiet days getting to know her. Storie does not wait. She goes into labor that night, and the puppies start coming the next day, 18 hours after she left the shelter.
Getting her out was the whole point. Having puppies in a shelter is stressful for the mom and for the babies, so Chris and Mariesa foster Storie for Pibbles and More Animal Rescue.
At two weeks the puppies start to open their eyes. Their ears begin folded up like little cauliflowers, and then those open too. Now, when someone turns on the light, the whole litter wakes up and plays.
Save"I just hope that they all get good homes and have happy lives," one of them says. The rescue will see to the homes, and with luck none of these puppies will ever be in a shelter again.
There are already tons of applications in. There's also some talk about keeping a puppy named Sasha, maybe two. That would put the house at ten dogs. "I believe that's hoarding," comes the answer, and two is ruled out.
The dogs give their relationship more depth and meaning, they say. Sharing something you care about this much with someone who takes it on and thrives on it is "so rare and so incredible."
