Great Dane Sadie saves her neighbor
Sadie usually comes when she's called. One St. Patrick's Day morning, the 175-pound Great Dane planted herself in the driveway and would not move. more
Rob Jerry had taken her out for a walk. When he called her, she stayed right where she was, staring down the driveway toward a neighbor's house. She's a harlequin Great Dane, spotted black and white like a cow, and when a dog that size decides to stay put, she stays put.
SaveSo Rob stopped and listened, and he heard something faint. "I thought it sounded more like a deer grunt," he says, and he figured that was what she had seen. A couple of seconds later he knew better. "It wasn't a grunt. It was a help."
SaveHis neighbor, 89-year-old Albert Larson, was lying in his own driveway. He had slipped on ice going to get the paper and had been there for at least an hour. His first thought was to keep moving, so he used his shoulder to inch his body up the long driveway, yelling for help, until he couldn't go any farther. By then his clothes were freezing to the ground.
When Rob reached him, Albert still had his sense of humor. "He says, 'What's up?'" Albert remembers. "I said, 'I wish I was up.'"
SaveHe had bruises along his leg and shoulders and a broken hip, and he went into rehab to recover. Albert's wife says she can't imagine life without her husband, and she thanks the dog who found him.
SaveBecause Sadie wouldn't budge, the couple got to celebrate their 69th wedding anniversary together. Plenty of people give Rob credit too, for paying attention to what his dog was telling him. One fan hopes they let Sadie in to celebrate with them.
