Cat rides a paddleboard with three huskies

Three huskies and one small cat head out to a forest lake on a still summer evening. The cat, Belka, has never seen this much water. more

The huskies are Yuki, Monty and Olive, and the lake is their kind of place. The water lies flat as a mirror under thick green trees. Belka has come along for the walk too.

Out on the water, Olive rides the orange board while the man at the paddle keeps close to the shore. "Olive already feels much more confident on the SUP," her owner says. Every dog wears a bright life vest, on the sensible grounds that "all dogs swim great, but I prefer to think about their safety."

Then Belka gets her turn on the board, and the little cat looks really interested. On that first ride she sits calm and still as the board slides over the lake. None of the huskies is half as cool.

Yuki and Monty wait patiently on the shore for their own rides. When the turns come round, the huskies hop on and off the board as if they had practiced it for years. Behind them, some of the trees along the bank glow gold.

Belka gets time on dry land too. "Belka is like a real forest cat," the owner says, and she looks the part, resting under a tree in a ring of leaves of many colors.

The dogs have energy to spare. Two of them share the board in their vests, and Olive earns herself a new job title: "Olive would make a good water rescuer."

The evening has one surprise left. Belka goes out on the board again, curious as ever, and ends up in the lake. "Belka's dive was a complete surprise," her owner admits. She takes the dip in stride, and as one person watching put it, she forgot she was a cat for a minute.
