Two Great Danes stare down a Costco chicken
It's Costco chicken night, and two Great Danes named Maddie and Ellie take up their posts at the kitchen counter. more
Maddie's post is the counter itself. She rests her chin on the edge, which happens to sit at exactly Great Dane height, and fixes both eyes on the bird. Ellie takes the far side and keeps a more polite distance.
Their dad lifts the chicken onto the carving board. Maddie's nose drifts toward it and he heads her off, so she settles for licking her lips. In the voice the family gives her, she's a good girl who doesn't counter surf, "at least when anyone's watching." Then he cuts a few pieces onto a plate, and Maddie looks at it as if the whole plate were hers.
It's not. He spears one piece on a fork and holds it up for Maddie. She takes it, chews a few times and swallows, and her eyes go straight back to the plate.
SaveThe next piece crosses the counter to Ellie, who takes hers with the manners of the lady of the house. Maddie does not wait on her own side for long. She circles around and plants herself next to Ellie, in case the fork comes back that way.
The fork does come back. Their dad holds up another piece for Maddie and then a second for Ellie, who has stood by without so much as a nudge. That makes two pieces each, and the rest of the bird is saved for Mom's soup.
SaveThen the fork stops. Two big faces follow it back to the plate and hold there, waiting on a third round that is not coming. Anyone who has carried one of those chickens home from Costco knows the look on Maddie's face from the inside.
