German shepherds can't pick who to greet first
Two German shepherds have been waiting a long time for their people to come home. Now both of them are back at once, and neither dog can work out whom to greet first. more
A woman bends down by the glass windows and potted plants, and both shepherds crowd in at once. Tails swing hard. “Hello, guys,” comes the greeting, and each dog takes it personally.
SaveThen there is the noise. One of the shepherds can't stop barking, and it's not the deep bark you would expect from a dog his size. It comes out high and squeaky, closer to a puppy's yelp. One viewer said he sounds like a coyote when he cries.
Mom and dad are both back, and that's a problem. A shepherd gets halfway through saying hello to dad, spots mom, and swings over to her. Then dad needs another hello. “Hi, baby,” one of them says, and a little later, “Hello, hello.”
SavePeople who have lived with shepherds know this scene well. One person who grew up with German shepherds said this was the welcome every day after school. A long time away just turns the volume up.
There are quieter moments too. One big brown shepherd's head rests right beside a hand on the black grate, close enough to touch.
SaveTheir people are home. For two German shepherds, that is the whole job.
