Starving puppy still wants to share his bread
He's starving and filthy, alone among bricks and debris. He is also wagging his tail and holding a slice of bread nearly as big as he is. more
Rachael, from the South African rescue group Sidewalk Specials, has come for him. Someone left him behind, and he has spent a week on his own, cold and scared. He still looks happy to see the rescue team, and he holds out his bread as if to share it.
That offer is the part people can't get past. He has almost nothing, and he wants to split it anyway. "We were there just in the nick of time for him," Rachael says.
SaveHis sunny attitude kept him going. He spends his first night at the vet, and the next day he gets the all-clear to go to a foster family, where he stays for a week.
Then Freya adopts him. He's 9 weeks old and tiny, about half the length of an arm, and she names him Gunnar. He opens up to the family right away and wants to explore everything, including a lawn he has probably never seen before.
SaveAt the beach he digs holes and runs as long as he can. He has a set routine. Run, sniff, come back with a ball or a stone.
SaveThe stones matter most. Gunnar has had a thing for rocks since Freya brought him home. He hunts for just the right one, never any old rock, and carries it back to her like a gift.
SaveWhen Freya starts fostering dogs, Gunnar gets play buddies, and once they settle in he is always the one showing them around. The puppy who once offered his bread to strangers now brings rocks instead. He is still the same happy little creature.
