Searching a quarry for a mama dog's puppies
The quarry covers 200 acres of Los Angeles, and somewhere in it are a mama dog's puppies. more
The mama, called Momma Quarry, is already safe. A street rescuer picked her up when she was skin and bones. Her babies are still out there, though, and with city traffic all around, they need to be found fast.
The ground doesn't help. "It's impossible to catch them," the rescuer says of the wide, open land. There are hiding spots everywhere. A dog may have slept here, or squeezed through the fence there. She calls them "little tiny caves, almost." A husky, the puppies' father, has been seen down here too.
So she does it the slow way. She walks under a hot sun, crawls on her hands and knees and pushes through fences. She stops to ask a man she sometimes talks to there if he has seen any dogs lately. He has not.
Then she hears something. "Oh, what is that?" she says. "Doesn't that sound like puppies?"
SaveThere's a squeal, then a gentle voice. "You're cold, honey." One of the pups is in bad shape and needs a vet right away.
Not every puppy makes it. The babies had gone too long without water in that heat, and only three survive.
Those three go back to their mother. Inside a crate, the rescuer holds a pup while Momma Quarry watches through the bars.
Save"Come here, baby," the rescuer keeps saying. "Here, honey. Come here. Come on." Later, Momma Quarry lies on a blanket and nurses the pups the quarry gave back.
