Eight baby flying foxes on one giant teddy
In Megabattie's bat nursery, the babysitter is a giant teddy bear. Eight baby flying foxes cling to it, each one wrapped in a little blanket. more
Megabattie hand-raises baby flying foxes, and to keep them calm she always gives them a teddy bear to cling to. With eight babies in the nursery, this teddy is a giant. "Teddy is looking after all the babies for us," she says, and then she goes down the row to say hello.
First is Tom, who came in very skinny. Tom was found hanging in a tree above her mother, who had died. Next comes Seven of Nine, a name any Star Trek fan will know.
Not every baby is happy to stay wrapped. "Yes, I know, you can get out in a second," Megabattie tells one of them. Then she introduces a new little girl who came in only the day before. Every one of them has a blanket and a pacifier.
SaveJessamine and Goosebumps are next. Goosebumps got her name because she was so cold when she was rescued in the middle of the night. Last is Tootsweet, who gets a "hello, darling."
Wrapped up and lined up on the bear, the eight of them look like a tray of tiny bat burritos. Megabattie can already tell which one will break out first. "It won't take long for at least that one to get out," she says.
SaveFlying foxes are bats with big hearts and big brains, and some people say they are as clever as dogs. That's part of why the babies need so much care while they grow. Until they're ready to go back to bat life, they have Teddy, who holds all eight and does not mind one bit.
