Grandma Wendy reads the baby news and misses it

Ashley is pregnant, and she's not about to just tell her mother. She writes the news on a game card instead. more

The game is Mad Gab. Each card holds a string of nonsense words that turns into a real phrase when you say it out loud. Ashley made her own cards, and Grandma Wendy gets the first one. "Ready, Mama? Here."

Wendy sounds it out every way she can. Ashley tells her to try it with an Italian accent. The guesses come out sideways: "I'm going to be around more there." Then, "I'm my own mother."

At one point she gets the words "be a grandmother" out of her mouth and keeps right on going. "Okay, close enough. How about this one?"

The second card brings a near miss: "I may soon be pregnant." Then she reads it right. "Ashley and Mason are pregnant." She has said the news out loud, and it still hasn't landed. "You want to try this one again?"

Then, all at once, it hits. "Oh, I'm going to be grandma." What follows is a lot of squealing, some crying and a whole bunch of hugging.

"Ashley is very creative," somebody says. Then the news goes down the family line, with one quick fix. "You're going to be a little brother. No, big brother."

Once the news lands, the hugs keep coming.

"That took way longer than I thought," Ashley says. Her mom had even tried to pass on the grandmother card. "We will not let you pass."

Ollie finds the whole thing a little scary. "His poor little heart is going as fast as mine," someone says. "It's okay, Ollie."
