Santa wasn't coming, so a cashier stepped in
A boy named Jacob and his mom came through Abby's checkout line at the supermarket. Making small talk, the young cashier asked him what he wanted for Christmas. more
Jacob had an answer. He and his siblings had made a list, and he was hoping for some games. His mom turned to Abby and said they had already had that talk. "Santa's not coming," she told her. "We don't have enough money for all that."
For Abby, that settled it. She felt it was meant to be that this family came through her line. "I was going to do something about it," she says. "I had to."
She got the family's phone number and went right back to work, signing up for overtime so every extra dollar could go to presents. Her own mom remembers what Abby told her on the way out: "You didn't meet him. You don't know how I feel. This has to happen."
After her shift, Abby went shopping. Later that night she came to Jacob's house and handed him the gifts, with more for the rest of the family.
SaveThat night made the two of them friends. "Now I know that I'll always have a friend," one of them says. "We'll never forget each other."
