Breakfast time with 53 hungry baby goats

At Sunflower Farm Creamery, the day begins with 53 baby goats hollering for breakfast, all at the same time. more

The babies are a mix of breeds, with some Nubians in the crowd, and every one of them has something to say. Together they sound, as one person put it, like a thousand Furbys crying.

Breakfast means a move. The farmers have to get all of them into a new pen to have their milk, and with this many goats, each one still needs enough attention.

When the moment comes, the babies storm through like kids on the last day of school. Then they head straight for their mothers, still yelling.

The mothers make the best climbing frames of all. The little ones scramble onto their backs and stand there as if it were the most normal thing in the world, while the grown goats stand in the hay and let them.

Any other high spot will do, too. The babies hop onto each other's backs and up onto edges that look far too narrow, and their tiny hooves somehow hold on.

Outside, there's room to run, and the goats gallop and frolic through the field. When they finally stop, two of them rest side by side on the dry ground in the sun.

Baby goats are called kids, which makes this one very big family. With 53 of them to feed every morning, the farmers really do have their hands full.
