A dad and daughter sing with Jim Brickman
Jim Brickman sits at a grand piano trimmed with red berries, in a living room dressed for Christmas. Beside him, Mat Shaw and his daughter Savanna are about to sing. more
The song is "A Little Bit of Christmas," and it starts with a promise. Never let a moment go by, the first line says, without telling the ones you love how much you love them. Everyone in the room is dressed for the season, and Mat and Savanna sing with their hands as much as their voices.
SaveThe next promise is the one a lot of people could use by the middle of December. It is a plan to "let go of the mess and the stress and the rush" and pay attention to what is beautiful instead.
Then the chorus comes in, and it holds the whole idea. "Everywhere you look, there's a little bit of Christmas," in smiling faces and joyful sounds, and it can last all year round.
SaveFather and daughter take turns on the verses and meet on the chorus. Their parts weave in and out and trade the lead back and forth, which one fan compared to a Bach fugue. Another said their voices felt like a balm.
One viewer noticed Jim leaning around the piano as he played, watching the pair and smiling while they sang. Plenty of others were just glad to see him there, including one who said he has been a favorite for decades.
SaveThe second verse goes deeper, asking for prayers for "the ones who've lost their way" and promising to count blessings. One listener had the all-year idea long ago. Her nativity sets no longer get packed away in January, she wrote, and stay out in a corner cabinet her husband built.
When the music stops, the three of them talk. The Shaws say making this one was a dream come true, because they got to do it with "one of our idols, the great Jim Brickman." Jim says the honor was his, and Mat is all smiles.
SaveTo Jim, the song is about spreading love and kindness all through the year, and he sees no reason to save that for one season. While it was being written, he thought about who should sing it, and when he heard Mat and Savanna, he knew they would be perfect. Before they say goodbye, someone points out that the world could use a little bit of Jim Brickman all year, too.
