Homeless man turns down $4,000 for a lost ring

Sarah Darling stops to give a homeless man named Billy a $20 bill. She walks away without noticing that her diamond ring has dropped into his cup too. more

The story is a short drama from Dhar Mann Studios, and it starts small. Billy spends his time holding out a cup and asking people to spare some change. Sarah gives enough that he says, "Now I don't have to sleep on the street tonight." When he asks why she gave so much, she tells him, "I've always believed what goes around comes around."

She works across the street, she says, and she's sure she'll see him around. Only after she leaves does Billy spot the ring in his cup. He runs after her and looks all over, but she's nowhere in sight. Just as he gives up, he finds himself in front of a pawn shop and walks in.

The clerk looks the ring over and offers $4,000. "That's so much money," Billy says, and it would keep him off the street for months. But Sarah's line keeps coming back to him. When the clerk asks, "Aren't you going to take it?" he says he changed his mind and leaves with the ring.

As he walks, he remembers that she works across the street. So Billy goes into one nearby office after another, asking for Sarah Darling. No one seems to know her. He keeps trying, until at last someone says yes and calls her over.

"Hello, I believe this belongs to you," Billy says. "You dropped it in my cup." Sarah has been looking everywhere for her ring, and she asks why he gave it back when he could have sold it. He hands her own words back to her. "You helped me, so it's the least I could do. Besides, a wise woman once told me what goes around comes around."

Someone in the office says she should start a GoFundMe for him, and Sarah does. She tells the story of the man who brought back her ring, and people all over the world start to give. Within a few days the page has raised more than $190,000.

A few days later, it's Sarah who goes looking for Billy. She finds him sitting against a wall with his cup, head down. She tells him she has a surprise for him, "190,726 surprises, to be exact."

Billy looks at the money, confused, and asks if it's really for him. He doesn't understand what's going on. She explains that people around the world gave, so he won't have to worry about sleeping on the streets anymore. He can buy his own home. "God bless you," he says, and Sarah says it right back.
