A dog with a bow for a lonely widower
An old man sits alone in a quiet house full of clocks. A Christmas tree stands across the room, and he gazes at an old photo of himself and his late wife. more
He sits on a leather couch with his cane, looking off to the side. A soft song plays over the quiet: "please keep waiting for the morning, don't give up too soon."
SaveThe next day he is reading a book when there is a knock at the door. He opens it, and to his surprise a fluffy dog is waiting there with a bow tied to his back.
After that, the two are hardly ever apart, and the smiles start to come back. He tells the dog all about his life. They play chess and watch TV together, and on their walks the old man has a new spring in his step.
SaveBedtime is harder to sort out. He tries to get the dog to sleep in a bed of his own, but night after night they both end up asleep on the man's bed.
So he goes online and orders the dog a new mattress. When it comes, it goes on the floor right beside his bed, and the dog loves it. Fitting, since the whole story is a Christmas ad from Nimbus Beds about lonely older people in the UK. It ends on a hard number: 45 percent of older adults admit to feeling lonely.
Plenty of people said it made them cry, and one admitted to spending the whole time sure the dog would die. Pet owners saw themselves in the old man, down to one viewer who spends every Christmas with a little cat. Another had just one complaint about the ending. No mattress, they said, would keep that dog off the big bed for long.
