The makeover that fooled her husband
Mary Johnson has come from Fargo, North Dakota, with shoulder-length gray hair. Asked how she's feeling, she answers, "Anxious, anxious." more
The stylist teases her that Fargo isn't a lot of inspiration, so she will have to be the inspiration. "I need to be taken seriously," Mary tells him. He can do that, he says, and the ground rules are set fast. No purple, no blue.
She wants a whole new look, and a little spark to go with it. She's in a weight-loss challenge with a friend she will probably see next year, and she hopes a fresh start will help her build some self-discipline.
She has watched the other makeovers and says she can't imagine anything going wrong. Then the gray is gone and short blonde curls take its place. The stylist points out how it moves. She can shake her head and the hair swings with her, and he calls her "adorable and bubbly."
SaveA client who walks past guesses she is 42. That gets an "oh wow," since 42 was almost 20 years ago. Mary sums up the day herself with "I couldn't feel better," then jokes that the team didn't have much of a canvas to work with, "but holy moly."
Then her husband arrives. Someone warns that he doesn't usually react strongly, though this might be the exception. When he's told his wife is over there, he looks and says that's not her. He admits he wouldn't have recognized her.
SaveViewers noticed what stayed the same. Her dimples are still there, and her freckles still show through the makeup. One joked that she could join witness protection and never leave her own neighborhood. Her husband has already proved the point.
