Out back with John Fogerty and his guitar
For a song called "Lookin' Out My Back Door," John Fogerty goes one step further. He's out past the door, sitting in the yard with an acoustic guitar. more
He wears a cap and a red plaid shirt, and he sits near the trunk of a tree. There's a white wooden fence and a lot of green. That's the whole stage.
SaveFogerty wrote this one for Creedence Clearwater Revival, where he was lead singer and guitarist, and he sings it here at 74. "Just got home from Illinois," he starts, and his voice still has its old strength. Then the song's cheerful oddballs turn up, a happy creature dancing and "tambourines and elephants playing in the band."
There's no band here to play them. It's just Fogerty and his guitar, out in the open air.
Fans keep pointing at the voice. One fan says he sings it in the same key he did 50 years ago, and another says he still hits the high notes. Others say he only gets better with age, and that he needs no gimmicks to prove it.
SaveMany hear their own past in it. A 60-year-old fan from Russia says it brings back being young, and a fan from Argentina says it made their dad smile. Another remembers paying a nickel to play a CCR song on a jukebox back in grade school. Out in the yard, Fogerty just keeps strumming and smiling.
