Neck rub time for a very fluffy red fox

Every winter, Asriel the red fox grows a thick new coat. This is his sixth, and it has puffed him up into something close to a cushion with ears. more

He is a pet, bred in America and bought from a breeder. He pokes around outside in the fallen leaves while his owner talks to him in the silly baby talk people save for the animals they love most.

"What's that?" his owner asks him. "That's the tractor. My brother's gonna mow the field."

There is a weather report for him too. His owner says it is going to get down to the 20s next week, so it's a good thing he has that coat.

Then comes the neck rub. A hand slides under his chin and scratches. Asriel looks almost overwhelmed by how good it feels.

Foxes get called part dog and part cat, and he plays both parts here. He soaks up the attention like a dog and makes soft little sounds that people hear as half cat, half baby. The top comment under his video puts it best, calling foxes "dog hardware running on cat software." Soon his chin is resting in his owner's palm and his eyes are closed.

Every so often he turns and mouths at the hand, more nibble than bite. His owner keeps right on talking to him, and by the end the baby talk is down to "nom nom nom."
