Friendly deer stops by for a pancake

“Do you like pancakes?” a man asks the deer standing in front of him. He offers one, then a kind of handshake and a polite “nice to meet you.” more

The answer is yes. The deer eats the pancake and stays right where he is, calm on the dirt and gravel, his big ears up. “Pretty sure deer like pancakes,” the man says. It's hard to argue with him.

After his pancake, the deer stays close, ears up and calm on the gravel.

Then a rooster comes strutting over to see what is going on. The man takes one look at him and finds a problem. The cold weather has nipped the old bird, and his comb has gone black with a little frostbite.

He does not make a fuss about it. “Got a little cold, but you're all right,” he tells the rooster, in the same easy voice he uses on the deer.

The deer stays close the whole time. He lets the man pet him like a dog, gentle and still, as if a man with pancakes is a normal part of his day.

“Pretty wild,” the man says, looking him over. It is Christmas time, and the deer still has the soft velvet on his antlers. Somebody once told the man it just falls off. “Not this guy,” he says.
