Beck the shepherd falls for a kitten

Beck is a 1-year-old German shepherd who has always had the run of the house. Then his people bring home a small ginger kitten named Bleu. more

It does not go well. Beck keeps his distance, and you can almost see him roll his eyes. Bleu is all energy, and Beck, spoiled and used to having the place to himself, wants no part of the games.

Then the annoyance wears off. Before long the two of them are playing every day, and the dog who wouldn't share his house has a little brother.

Outside, the grass is tall enough to hide a kitten. Beck stands in it with his ears up and his tongue out, keeping an eye on things.

Bleu has a lot of faith in hiding. At one point the kitten slips under a pillow. Beck stares straight at the pillow.

Between games, they rest. Beck lies on the rug by the door, near the boots, with the kitten right beside him. For a dog who never had to share anything, that's a lot of rug to give up.

Their play happens face to face. Bleu goes for Beck's jaw, and Beck answers with his whole head. Much of it is the two of them chewing on each other's faces.

What people notice most is how gentle Beck is. He's far bigger and stronger than the kitten, and he plays like he knows it. One fan loved the way he bites at the air instead of at Bleu.

Bleu grows into a full-sized cat, and Beck stays protective of his little brother. As one fan put it, this isn't the family's cat anymore. He is Beck's.
