He danced 10,000 miles with strangers
Matt Bray hit the road with a boombox and his dancing shoes, and not much else. more
The song is "Gone" by JR JR, and he has one routine to go with it. Wherever he went, Bray asked the people he met to learn the moves and dance them with him. He would teach the steps. Feeling the music was up to them.
On a desert road under a wide blue sky, two men in hats and sunglasses take their places, one with his hands on his hips. It looks like the start of an old western, until they break into the dance.
SaveWhat makes it work is how neatly the pieces fit. Each new dancer lands in just the right spot, so the routine flows from one place to the next as if it never stopped. There is even a close call by the water, where one viewer was sure a man on the far right was about to fall in.
The cast keeps changing. Couples join in, and so do newlyweds. A young woman in a white wedding dress dances on the wooden deck outside her house, in soft evening light.
SaveThen come the costumes. On a beach, a man dressed as a lion, cape and all, strolls along beside a man in sunglasses and a green jacket as if this were perfectly normal.
SaveBy the end, Bray had traveled 10,000 miles and met more than 100 people along the way. One much-liked comment says it makes the world look like an awesome place. Another just hopes every one of those dancers got to see how it all turned out.
