Dad sings his own song at her wedding

Six months before her wedding, Kayla texted her dad to ask what song he wanted for their father-daughter dance. His answer was "Don't worry about it. I got it covered." more

She had named two of his all-time favorite songs and said a friend would be happy to perform one. For the next six months, people kept asking Robert Davis which song he picked. At the outdoor reception, he finally gave them the answer. "I didn't pick a song. I wrote a song."

It is a country tune, sung over a backing track by Jeff Bohannon, and it starts at the very beginning. He sings about the day she was born "with a full head of hair," looking up at him with "that inquisitive stare," and then the years of riding on his shoulders and walking hand in hand.

Kayla as a baby, one of the childhood pictures that go with the first verse of her father's song.

Pictures from her childhood go by as he sings. Each verse lands on the same thought: "It goes by so fast, before you realize there's a woman standing there before your eyes." In the evening light, the bride, in a white strapless dress and a crown of flowers, dances with her father in his light suit jacket.

Six months before her wedding, Kayla texted her dad to ask what song he wanted for their father-daughter dance.

The last verse runs through her firsts, from her first steps and her first bike ride to her first day of school. Then he turns the page. "But this is now and that was then," he sings. "I can't wait to meet your children, do it all over again."

Every chorus ends with the same simple ask, and it's the last thing he sings. "Dance with me, my little girl. This is our dance."
