"You are right" and other maid of honor advice
Heidi's younger sister, Mel, is the maid of honor, and she wants the room to know she came ready. She had a bunch of Johnnie Walker Blue first, so she'd be prepared. more
The thank-yous are next. She thanks David's side of the family for welcoming them with open arms, and her own side for being there on time. Her mom, she reports, gave her two rules. "Don't burp and don't curse. Well, Mom, you get one thing. I'm not going to burp."
The curse arrives right on schedule. She thought and thought about this speech, she says, until it hit her, with exactly the word her mom asked her not to say, that her sister was getting married in 30 minutes.
She introduces herself properly. Her name is Melanie, and she is the maid of honor and the younger sister. It's hard to find anything nice to say about Heidi that their parents haven't already said, because Heidi really is the favorite. Between excelling in academics, sucking up to Mom and being generally awesome, she set the bar high.
So Mel thanks her for letting her be the black sheep of the family "for the past 100 years." She calls Heidi a beautiful bride and promises she isn't just saying it because, according to David's family, the two of them look like twins.
Turning to Heidi, she gets serious, and this is where the tears start. She wrote this speech a hundred times over, she tells Heidi, and couldn't find the words for how much she loves her and how much she means to her. Heidi has been a great mentor, and she taught her that there is beauty in everyone, no matter what they do.
SaveIt doesn't stay serious for long. Heidi also taught her that having a blind dog can be the best and weirdest thing ever. And Mel doesn't know anyone else who could plan a wedding from 1,300 miles away and only become a bridezilla twice. She's proud to call her a sister, and happy to have a new brother.
That brother, David, gets some advice. Say three special words to her every single day. "You are right." When you're wrong, be a man and admit it. When you're right, say nothing. Then she asks everyone to raise a glass. More than one viewer has asked whether she does stand-up, and her timing makes a good case.
