A faint whine led firefighters to five puppies

Crews from Moreland, Egleston, Fruitport and Muskegon Township get to work. Then they learn that five puppies are still inside. The firefighters head in, but the house is so full of smoke that a first search turns up nothing.

They keep fighting the fire for hours. Then Adam Morse, Dan Minzey Jr. and Shane Ingersoll hear a faint whine. It leads them to a back bedroom still thick with black smoke, and there are the puppies, all five of them.

The puppies barely move as the men pass them out a window. "I didn't think even one would make it," one firefighter says. The crew sets them in a car and puts oxygen masks made for pets over their faces.

When the fire is finally out, the men go back to check on them, expecting the worst. All five are up and jumping around, ready to climb out of the truck.

The puppies go to Pound Buddies, a dog shelter in Muskegon, where director Lana Carson looks after them and every one makes a full recovery. Each gets a fire-themed name so the families who adopt them will know where they came from. The puppy whose whine led the crew to that back bedroom is now called Siren.

The firefighters have already been back to visit the puppies at Pound Buddies. Soon all five will be up for adoption.

At Pound Buddies, the rescued puppies get well and wait for new homes.

Around Muskegon, people are calling the crew superheroes. One of the firefighters sees it another way. "Anybody could have went in those rooms and got those dogs," he says, "but we were lucky enough to do it."
