After 11 homes, Gumby gets a job at the shelter
Gumby is only 4, and he has already gone home with 11 different families. Every time, the white dog ended up back at the Charleston Animal Society in South Carolina. more
He first came in as a stray. The shelter doesn't euthanize, so there was time to find him a family, and the staff liked him right away. He was friendly and playful, and nobody expected him to be hard to place.
Then the homes started sending him back. One family lasted six days. Another lasted three. Some of the time he didn't wait to be returned at all. He left the house and made his way back to the shelter on his own, and more than once he was found wandering the streets.
SaveHe never lashed out at anyone. He just kept leaving. On paper he looked like a problem dog, and his odds of a forever home looked slim to none.
At last the staff saw what was going on. Gumby simply wanted to stay with them. The way they saw it, he had a job to do, and he had been doing it the whole time.
When a new dog came in scared, Gumby did whatever he could to help the newcomer feel a little more at home. So the shelter made it official and found him a permanent role. He became the therapy dog for all the fearful animals there.
SaveHe has a second job, too. Gumby gives blood on a regular basis, for other dogs and, in an emergency, for cats as well.
These days the shelter is his forever home. He plays with about 50 other dogs, and the staff keep him well stocked with treats. He found his family after all. It was the people who kept taking him back in.
