Brynn the nursing home dog and her crooked leg

Brynn broke a leg as a puppy, and it healed at an odd angle. She has been walking on that crooked leg ever since. more

Her start was rough. She came out of a hoarding case in southern Texas, where more than 50 dogs and cats were found without enough food or water. Brynn had sores on her skin and an infection so bad that her tail had to be removed. Only after that did anyone find out her left front leg had been broken.

Brynn was one of more than 50 dogs and cats rescued from a hoarding case.

Her owner found her online while looking for a dog for the Colorado Lutheran Home, a nursing home. "I was in love with her before we got her," she says. Most nights, Brynn stays with her.

At the home she visits with the residents, and they're all getting to know her and love her. She puts her head in their laps and gives a few kisses. As her owner puts it, "It definitely takes a special dog to be a nursing home dog."

But the leg has been bothering her more. She licks it more often than she used to, and she limps a lot more. Her owner hopes the vet can re-break it, or do whatever he can. "We don't want her to have any more pain."

So Brynn goes to see Dr. Jeff, the vet from the TV show "Dr. Jeff, Rocky Mountain Vet." He has her stand on the floor and works the bent leg in his hands. Brynn doesn't react at all. The break was most likely near the bottom, he says, and it healed bent, so she has been putting weight on her wrist the wrong way.

For now the leg does not seem to bother her much. But if the pain ever starts to get in the way of a good life, he says, they can take away the source of it with an amputation. Her owner looks away, upset.

It's not the answer her owner came in hoping for. Still, plenty of three-legged dogs get around just fine. And a dog who went from a hoarding case to resting her head in nursing home laps has handled harder things than this.
