Senior dogs find homes in Mr. Mo's name
Chris and Mariesa Hughes say one dog changed their lives and the whole feel of their house. His name was Mr. Moses. more
"He was such a special dog and just so much fun," they say. After his death, the couple started the Mr. Mo Project in his honor. They don't want anybody to forget about him.
The project is for senior dogs, the ones who might never get the chance at another home. It places them with adopters and helps cover their costs for the rest of their lives.
A whole group of sponsors has signed on. Ashley, who sells on Etsy, gives a discount on dog nose prints and sends money from each sale to the project. For one of the couple, her work meant more than that. "She just kind of gave me back Moses."
SaveVets offer free office visits and dental work. BarkBox has given free three-month subscriptions, and a pet center will help dogs leaving the shelter switch to healthy food, which they hope keeps vet bills down. One supporter who rescues senior dogs too puts it plainly. "People don't realize the value in the life of a senior dog."
As the project grows, the couple hopes to help dogs across the country, and maybe one day every shelter will use it. Whoever adopts one of these dogs gets a Mr. Mo packet. Nadia is one of them. She's 9 years old and looking for a forever home.
SaveAny money that comes in goes into a vet fund. Right now they pay $106 a month for one dog's Cushing's medicine, and they plan to keep paying for the rest of her life.
Since the start, ten or more dogs have been adopted. The couple also thanks the Facebook friends and family who stood by them through a hard time with Moses. "We couldn't have done it without them."
Then it's back to the dogs. "Go on," someone says. "Good boy."
