The beagle who trades a tooth check for toast
Oliver's dad wants to talk about teeth. Oliver's teeth, to be exact, which Oliver would rather keep to himself until there's toast. more
Oliver is such a jolly dog that his teeth hardly ever show, not even when he growls. So his dad lifts a jowl, and there they are. "Oliver, your teeth are so scary," he says. They're big, and on a face this sweet they come as a surprise.
Oliver doesn't look amused. Still, he sits there and lets his dad put his fingers in his mouth, and even gives them a lick. His dad says he feels completely safe doing it, because Oliver would never bite him.
SaveThey brush his teeth regularly, his dad says, though Oliver doesn't love it. Oliver answers with a head tilt. They used to have a toothpaste that tasted like chicken, but it gave him very smelly breath. Now it's mint, just like the kind people use.
The mint tastes pretty good, his dad says, but not as good as toast. Oliver seems to agree. His dad admits he has been very patient through all this and finally gives in. At the word toast, Oliver is off the couch and headed for the kitchen, though not before a good stretch.
SaveHis dad isn't quite done, though. While the bread is in the toaster, he tries for one more look, since he has looked up the names of dog teeth online. Oliver is in more of a scratching mood, so up goes the lip mid-scratch. The big one is the canine, the front ones are the incisors, and the molars sit in the back.
Oliver has heard enough. He barks at his dad to hurry up with the toast and keeps his eyes fixed on him from the kitchen floor.
SaveThe toast comes with blackberry jam instead of the usual strawberry, and as Oliver eats, his teeth finally flash on their own. That big canine, his dad adds, is good for ripping open boxes and presents at Christmas. His dad eats the rest of the toast, and Oliver gets the crumbs. He licks the plate until not one is left.
