Benny the Goldendoodle, wheels and all
Chickens, goats and several rescue dogs share Tucker's Farm with Benny, a Goldendoodle who loves a good tussle. He was born with a spine that will never let him walk on his own. more
Out in the tall green grass, he comes running in his harness, and nothing about him looks held back. Getting here took a few determined people and a lot of patience.
SaveBenny was surrendered to Jennifer Siegel when he was very young. Later, Elizabeth Williams welcomed him to Tucker's Farm, an animal rescue home that helps animals in need get back on their feet.
Elizabeth and Jennifer did everything they could think of. They kept him well fed and cared for and worked on his hind legs, and every time he did well, he got a cheer.
SaveThe therapy never brought the change they hoped for. They took him to several neurologists, who found severe birth defects caused by three fused vertebrae. Benny would never be able to walk on his own.
None of it dimmed Benny's mood. He went right on playing and tussling with his friends, the chickens and goats included. Elizabeth never gave up hope for him either, and she decided it was time for a wheelchair.
SaveBenny loves his wheelchair, even if he is still getting used to it. Wheels take some practice.
He has made several friends on the farm, and everyone there loves him. At one point a curly-haired child sits holding him close, all fluffy light brown fur and a blue collar.
SaveHe's surrounded by people who love him and by friends of more than one species. By any dog's measure, that's a very good life.
