How a kitten got a shy service dog to play
In a room or a park full of playing dogs, Samson would find a corner and sit in it. The golden retriever is a service dog, and around other dogs he was very shy. more
He wanted to join in, but he could never find the nerve. At work he was all business, and he helped people with his whole heart. His owner worried about him, so she tried something new and brought home a kitten.
Samson's reaction was a surprise. He got excited as soon as he saw the kitten, and he seemed to loosen up. The family named the little Scottish Fold Cleo. Whenever Samson was off duty, the two of them jumped and played.
This was a new Samson. The dog who used to sit in corners now wanted to spend every minute he could with Cleo. Playing, eating, exercising, even bath time, he wanted Cleo there.
On long hikes, Cleo climbs up on Samson's back and rides for a while. Their owner ties the kitten on securely so there's no tumble, and Samson does his part. He walks carefully, with his small passenger on top.
SaveLater on, a baby joins the family too. But the picture that stays with you is the hike: a big golden dog stepping with care, and a kitten riding high on his back.
