Cancer-free golden retriever can't sit still
Lily the golden retriever is sitting on a tile floor in her pink collar. Her people have news for her, and it is the best kind. more
She looks up at them, mouth a little open, and waits. She has no idea how long the odds were.
SaveLily had always been a dog full of energy, but she was weak by the time a six-pound tumor turned up on her spleen. For a golden retriever, there was only a 10 percent chance it wasn't cancer.
The only way to know for sure was surgery, and her owners went ahead anyway. Afterward the vets said it looked like a cancer that kills many dogs. In 25 years they had never had a case like it come back negative, and they told the family to prepare.
Then the doctor called. "I need you to sit down for this, Lily," her owner tells her. "You don't have cancer." She is the first case in 25 years.
SaveLily does her best to stay seated as the voice above her gets happier and happier. She's still trying at the end, and losing. Her people are thrilled because they know the odds, and Lily is thrilled because they are. "No, you're not going anywhere today," her owner says. "No, sir."
