From ball cap to blonde up-do at 57

Marion Williams has five grandchildren, a husband who just retired and hair that, in her words, goes "every which way." She's ready to leave the baseball cap at home. more

She came in from Bonaire, Georgia. She's from Texas and has lived in Georgia for 26 years. She is 57, with 58 coming in December, and she and her husband just marked their 26th anniversary. Her hair is too flat, too curly, too fuzzy, and she has one rule for the salon. No red.

Back when she was busy, she could grab something from the closet, look good, feel good and go. Now she mostly feels tired, and slouchy clothes and a ball cap have been easy when there's nowhere to go. She admits that is mostly an excuse, and her goal is short and honest. "I want to be more sexy, that's it."

Marion explains how tired she has felt, and what she wants from the makeover.

Christopher Hopkins, the Makeover Guy of Minneapolis, takes it from there. Her shoulder-length curly brown hair becomes a short blonde up-do with gentle waves and lots of volume. New makeup and a new outfit round it out.

When she sees the new look, she starts small and then corrects course. "It's a little bit different," she says. "It's a lot different. I love it."

She's shaking. "I had the whole enchilada," she says, and it feels good. She gives Joann the credit, saying she doesn't know what she would have done without her, and adds that everybody helped make it come together.

Then her husband walks in. "He improved on perfection," he says, and a moment later comes the line fans quote most: "It helps when you got something to work with, don't it." He asks if she is still nervous. They trade I love yous.

Her husband walks in and calls the new look an improvement on perfection.

She asks whether he would have cared what color they went with, and he would not. "I told you that flat top would have been fine with me as long as you're happy," he says. Now Marion feels like getting up and going somewhere, off the couch and out of the ball cap. "I'm here!"
