Following a mama pit bull back to her puppies
A security guard at a New Orleans supermarket calls in about a skinny dog roaming the parking lot. She is nursing, which means there are puppies somewhere close. more
The call goes to Villalobos, the pit bull rescue on Animal Planet's “Pit Bulls and Parolees.” The woman who runs it sends Sugar Hill and Country Matt to see if they can help.
SaveThe mama dog crosses the road to meet them. “She looked me right in my eyes like she was just asking me for help,” one of them says. She is so thin that they worry about what shape her puppies are in. Then she leads them right up to a house about 20 feet away.
The house belongs to her owner, who's in jail. His roommate says he has been taking care of her, but she looks like a dog that has been running the streets for months. He won't hand over the puppies, so the crew takes the mama and backs off. “I guarantee this isn't over.”
It isn't. An attorney who has been helping them gets the authorization they need, and the crew goes back. There are four puppies inside. The first two seem okay, but the other two look like they are in some trouble.
SaveBack at the shelter, the puppies are brought to her. “Hey, look who I got, Mama.” She hops straight into the dog bed, and they start nursing almost right away.
Save“That's a good mama,” someone tells her. In time, every one of them gets healthy enough to be adopted. From the street to the dog bed, the crew calls her Mama so often that it might as well be her name.
