Sixty baby goats and the long way to mama

The gate opens and sixty baby goats pour out of the barn at Sunflower Farm Creamery. Then they turn around and run straight back in. more

Then they do it again. Chris and Hope, who own the farm in Cumberland, Maine, have let the kids run wherever they like, and where they like is out past the white fence and home again, several times over. It looks like a small stampede that keeps changing its mind.

There are obstacles in the way, and the kids take them as a dare. A few lag behind, but everybody gets over, going out and coming back. They're loud about it, too. Sixty small voices at once sound a lot like kids yelling for mom.

After a few rounds, some kids stop and hang back while the rest go charging off without them. Then the owners let them all go to their mothers, and the race finally has a finish line. It's milk.

Some kids find their mother the moment they clear the fence. Others race around for a while, looking, before they find the right one. In the end every runner is at a mama's side, siblings together.

Manners vary. Some siblings wait their turn, and some climb right on top of each other. The mothers stand for it, which, going by the head-butts, takes real patience.

Three kids skip the milk rush. They stay behind in the barn and keep their own game going, running and hopping around together. Two more goat families stay inside as well. Their babies are still too tiny to roam like the rest, so they stay put with their mamas, out of the traffic.
