The Nutcracker, as danced by baby goats
Slow a barn full of baby goats way down, add the Nutcracker Suite, and they turn into a ballet company. A very new one. more
The kids at Sunflower Farm Creamery are only playing, the way baby goats do, all springs and no plan. In slow motion, though, each hop hangs in the air long enough to admire. One comes racing through the barn doorway as if on cue.
SaveThe music makes all of it look rehearsed. A kid trying to head-butt a friend becomes a duet.
SaveThe landings are another matter. These goats can jump surprisingly high, but sticking the landing isn't a skill they have picked up yet. At this speed, even a tumble looks like part of the routine.
SavePeople who watch have their own takes. One thinks scientists should study the way baby goats move. Another remembers being that happy to be alive, back when they still had cartilage. A harpist who has played that Nutcracker harp solo many times in the orchestra pit says this is the only way they can hear it again without wincing.
Not every dancer is in the front row. One little kid tags along behind the others from a distance while the rest of the company leaps around the barn.
SaveThen a small crowd jumps up onto the hay and keeps right on dancing. The star turn belongs to a black goat who kicks his legs out in perfect time with the music. He hits the beat better than most wedding guests.
