Wrinkle the duck runs the NYC marathon
Before the NYC marathon, Wrinkle the Pekin duck gets the idea explained in terms a duck can use. "It's just a whole bunch of people running together," her owner says. "It's like a flock." more
Then come the shoes. "You got your running shoes right here, Wrinkle," he tells her. They're red and homemade, and on race day she wears them down the city streets, under trees just starting to turn yellow.
Wrinkle is an emotional support duck, and out on the course she is on the job. People keep stopping her. One person needs a picture with her, and someone else wants a selfie. "That just gave me pet therapy," another says.
SaveA few of them know her already. "That's the one that ran last year, right?" one asks. Others want to know how anyone takes care of a duck like this. "She stays right with me all the time," her owner says.
A marathon is a long way on duck feet. When Wrinkle slows down, she gets a drink, and other runners offer her cups of water along the route. After a sip she speeds up again.
Two moments belong to the humans. A police officer gets his turn to pet her and announces, with obvious joy, that he's petting a duck. And one worn-out runner takes a look at her, finds a second wind and speeds past, declaring that he's not going to lose to a duck. Someone else sums it up: "This is why I love New York, right there."
At the finish line, the reporters want her picture too, and Wrinkle gets a medal for her work. Her owner was right about the flock. It just turned out to be a very big one, and every member of it wanted a selfie.
