On this dog bus, every pup knows their seat

In Alaska, one dog walker does her rounds in a minibus. Her riders sit in rows, wait to hear their names and take their treats with good manners. more

Inside the bus, she calls the roll. "Carl, Louis, Echo, Fish, Dasher." On it goes, Amaru and Jake and Yaro and Olga and more, and every dog gets a treat as she reaches them. "Would you guys like a complimentary liver with your bus ride?"

Each dog has a seat, and each dog stays in it. They look up at her and wait their turn. Plenty of kids on a school bus could take notes.

There's an afternoon crew too, and not every dog rides every day. The PM run brings Charles, Max, Flash and two brothers, Loki and Odin. Then there's Norman. "Norman is kind of a treat snob," she says, and sure enough, Norman passes.

Getting off has rules of its own. She brings bear spray along, since a black bear may be awake nearby. Little Lou gets a jacket that reads "Do not pet," because Lou doesn't like being petted by strangers. Then the word for everyone is "Stay."

The door opens, and the dogs stay put. She lets them go by name, a few at a time. "Lola, sit. No, Lola, sit. Good girl." Jake and Fish get the nod, then Olga. Somebody earns a cheerful "Hey, crazy pants."

The German Shepherd is the last dog off, right before her. Shepherd owners in the comments say that is just what the breed does. Their dogs like to keep their person in sight.

Once the dogs have run and played in the snow, they file back on and find their own seats again. The little white dog waits outside until every other dog is aboard. Then her name comes, and she hops on too.
