Baby duck fights sleep in accounting class
The teacher is busy working out deadlines for a class project. Dexter, a yellow duckling sitting on the table, is busy trying to stay awake. more
The plan takes some explaining. The 8th is a Tuesday, so that becomes the backup day. The students asked to start a lesson early in case the work runs long, and she agrees it will take time, "because you have to start from scratch." She puts real weight on that last line.
Dexter is not taking notes. His head droops toward the table, then jerks back up, and he gives himself a quick shake, the way a person does after nodding off on a bus. Little chirps and squeaks go with the shakes, as if he's talking himself through it.
"So that means Monday and Thursday we'll finish it," she goes on. Dexter's head sinks again. About half a minute in, he puts up his best fight yet, a run of fast nods and hard shakes that says he is not giving in. Anyone who has sat through a long lesson knows that exact move.
He gives in anyway. Dexter tips over the edge of the table, and someone catches him as he falls. Among the office supplies around him, fittingly, is a box labeled Reflex.
SaveFor the record, the layout should be done the following Monday. None of that matters to Dexter. He had one job in that class, staying upright, and someone else had to do it for him.
