A mother cow stomps until a stranger helps
The cow by the little lake won't stop stomping. She digs at the ground, stares at one spot on the fence, then turns to look at the man walking by. more
It's a clear, sunny day in Millbrook, Ontario, and Dave is out on foot when the Holstein catches his eye. Something about that fence has her badly upset.
SaveDave walks closer. A mark on her ear gives her name, Flo, and then he finds the reason for all the fuss. A newborn calf is lying on a slope on the far side of the fence, alone in the sun. The fence is electric, and just past it runs a busy highway, with cars going by nonstop.
Flo cannot get to her calf, and she grows more nervous as a stranger gets near it. Dave takes it slowly. He has a worried mother on one side of the wire and a brand-new baby on the other.
Then he reaches down and starts pushing the calf back under the fence, toward its mother. It takes some doing, right up against the electric wire, and he keeps at it until the little one is back on Flo's side.
SaveIt's not a safe place to be, with a nervous mother cow so close. Through it all, Dave talks to Flo in a soft, calm voice.
Before he leaves, Flo gives him a long, steady look. It's hard not to read it as a thank-you.
