Army dusts the Navy drumline with chalk
Outside the stadium at the Army-Navy football game, the two drumlines square off for a fight of their own, and the crowd splits right down the middle. more
Army goes first. The big bass drums and crashing cymbals get the crowd moving, and the line plays with plenty of swagger.
Navy answers in uniform, with a smaller line that plays tight and precise. The two sides go back and forth, and the cheering swings with them.
Somewhere in the middle, Army plays dirty in the friendliest way. One of its cymbal players covers the Navy drumline in powdered chalk, and it shows up at once on their clean drums. Navy isn't fazed. The drummers wipe the drums off and carry on.
Viewers have their own favorite bits. One loves the way the Army bass drummers shift the beat, one player at a time. Another points to the Navy drummers reaching over to play on the drum next to them.
After three sets each, the two lines march toward each other. Then they play together, Army and Navy on one beat, while the crowd dances. Both sides chant for their team at the same time, and the two chants drown each other out.
SaveThe comments never settle on a winner, though a surprising number of Army veterans give it to Navy. One man who served seven years in the Army and twenty in the Navy won't pick at all and calls them both winners. Plenty of others name the same favorite part, the jam at the end.
