The drill team that turns into a kaleidoscope
A high school drill team in Washington state faces the bleachers at the homecoming assembly and starts folding itself into patterns. more
At first they stand still on the gym floor in white uniforms, with the crowd watching from the bleachers. Then the counts start, and nothing stays put for long.
SaveEvery move is timed to the beat and to each other, so the squad stops looking like a group of girls and starts looking like one shape that opens and closes. The best trick is the ripple, where a move rolls down the line one dancer at a time.
SaveThey also use the floor far more than you would expect. Together they drop into splits on the court, and a favorite joke among viewers is that the janitor can skip mopping.
SaveBy the time Kanye West's "Power" hits, the routine is running at full strength. At one point the whole team kneels on the court at once.
SaveThe bleachers stay oddly calm through all of this, which viewers found very funny. Plenty said their own schools would have been on their feet. Drill fans also want it known that this is a drill team, not a cheer squad, and a few would like the kicks higher. One person who had been set on high school cheer now wants to do drill instead.
Kicks aside, the timing is hard to fault. From the first count to the last, the squad moves like one body with a great many arms.
