Elvis Presley sings "Can't Help Falling in Love"

Elvis Presley made his name with rock and roll, all swagger and moving hips. "Can't Help Falling in Love" asks for none of that. It's a slow love song, and he lets it be one. more

Fans who knew the swagger heard a softer side of him, and they liked what they heard. The simple melody is easy to know within a few notes, and the song went on to become one of his biggest hits.

This ballad gave fans a quieter Elvis than the rock and roll star they knew.

The tune is much older than he was. Its melody is based on "Plaisir d'amour," a French love song written in 1784. His producer, Hugo Peretti, heard an instrumental version and was struck by it, and the team built a new arrangement with new words on top of the old melody.

For some fans the song will always belong to the movie Blue Hawaii. One loves the little jewelry box in that scene. Another says that on a trip to Honolulu, they made a point of singing it on the beach.

Much of the love for it is personal. It was one listener's mom's favorite Elvis song and another's grandma's favorite, and a fan writing in Russian says you hear that velvet voice and melt. One listener already has plans for it. Someday, they say, this is the song they will dance to with their future husband at their wedding.
