Lek tries a selfie, and two elephants butt in

On a sandy riverbank at Elephant Nature Park, Lek is trying hard to keep her balance. Her two elephant friends aren't making it easy. more

Thong Ae and Faa Mai are Asian elephants, and both want Lek's attention at once. They hug her with their trunks and plant kisses that cover her whole face. One trunk comes to rest on her shoulder. Lek laughs and wobbles on the sand.

The elephants crowd in close, and one trunk settles on Lek's shoulder.

The song playing over all of this is a Paul Anka love song about resting your head on someone's shoulder. The elephants put a trunk there instead.

At one point Lek lies back on the riverbank to take a selfie with her phone. That plan lasts about as long as you would guess. Two trunks push into the picture, then push in again, like a pair of toddlers who won't be left out.

Lek lies back to take a picture, and the elephants push right into it.

Then the elephants start to tug. They pull playfully at her shoulders, and every pull is a gentle one. For animals that big and that strong, they're careful with her.

They steer her in between their front legs. It's the spot where elephants shelter a calf, and it is where Lek ends up. She runs her hands over their wrinkly skin and gives the love right back.

Lek has given her life to caring for elephants. On this riverbank, Thong Ae and Faa Mai make sure she is never more than a trunk's length away.
