Every morning a stray cat brought her a flower
The camellias came first. A few fresh blooms on the doorstep every morning, and no sign of who was leaving them. more
The one leaving them turned out to be a small grey stray, a Russian Blue, who padded up onto the porch with a flower held gently in her mouth. A daily gift, for the lady of the house. Most cats bring home mice. This one brought camellias.
SavePeople who have watched her closely say she doesn't just grab whatever has fallen off the bush. She picks the nicer ones. Days turned into weeks, and each flower bought a little more trust.
Then one chilly evening she walked into the house, camellia in her mouth, and looked up with her big green eyes. The answer was yes. She stayed, and she got a name, Fiddy.
SaveNot long after, a trip to the vet brought news. Fiddy was expecting kittens.
When the day came, she chose the comfort of her new home. She had her kittens on the very bed she had first climbed onto. She had picked this house once, from the porch. Now she picked it again.
For a while the house was all tiny paws and soft meows. Two of the kittens slept curled into one ball on a pink blanket printed with white stars.
SaveThey didn't stay forever. A local cat charity helped find each kitten a home of their own. Fiddy stayed where she was, with the woman she had chosen.
Later the two of them moved to a new place. Around it grow the same kind of camellia bushes her gifts had come from. These days there are flowers by the window, and a grey cat beside them with her ears up.
SavePeople who know flowers like to point out that a camellia stands for devotion. Fiddy never looked it up. She just picked the right flower, and the right door.
