Mama cat leads the way to her kittens
A thin cat with a limp turns up in Anelida's garden and begs for food. It's plain she is feeding kittens somewhere, and plain that it's costing her. more
There's nothing wild about her. She is calm and friendly from the start. She meows at Anelida and lets her come close, with none of the fear you might expect from a street cat.
Anelida follows her, carefully, and it takes a while. Sooner or later a nursing mother has to go back to her babies, and in the end this one heads for the bushes nearby.
Anelida pulls back the leaves and finds five kittens, with their mother right beside them. She doesn't run, and she doesn't hiss. She stays calm and lets Anelida see what she has worked so hard to hide.
SaveThe kittens all look healthy, and that's her doing. She has kept five babies hidden and fed while getting around on a bad back leg. It shows on her thin frame, not on them.
Anelida loads the kittens into a blue carrier, where they huddle together in one small heap. Their mother needs no coaxing. She follows close behind.
SaveThen comes a meal. The mother eats from a bowl, and one kitten, set on doing exactly what she does, bites the bowl instead of the food.
A vet looks the family over. The mother's femur, the long bone in her back leg, is permanently damaged and will never be quite right. She can still live on it without pain.
After that they quickly gain strength. The kittens fill out and sleep in a tangled pile until it is hard to tell whose paw is whose. One of them yawns, mouth wide open, right in the middle of it all.
SaveThree months later, all five kittens have homes of their own. Their mother lives a fairly normal life, free of pain, and she has nobody left to hide.
