Kikig is a British Shorthair with a light brown coat and a gentle streak her family knows well. Her owner keeps an online diary of her days called Cat's Diary, and those days now include a pair of mallard ducklings with yellow heads and dark bodies.

The ducklings follow her from room to room. In one, Kikig stands by the wall with her fur wet, and both ducklings walk right up beside her on the tile. It looks like a game of follow-the-leader, and the leader doesn't seem to mind.

When it's time to rest, she heads for her wicker sleeping basket. The ducklings come too, hopping in after her, and one of them makes it over the side with a proper little jump.

Kikig settles in and wraps a paw around her adopted brood. Then she does what a mother cat does with a baby in reach. She grooms one of the ducklings, licking the fuzz as if the duckling were a kitten of her own.

Evening comes on. Kikig's eyes go half closed, and she lets the ducklings cuddle in closer. Soon all three are breathing slow and even. Kikig drifts off first, and the ducklings stay tucked in against her, warm and safe.
