Newborn kitten opens his eyes to mama
His eyes have been open for only a little while, and already this newborn kitten has somewhere to be. The far side of a cardboard box, by the look of it. more
The box is lined with a soft pink towel, which turns out to be hard going for legs this new. He sinks into it with every step. He shakes his head, gathers himself, and pushes on toward the nearest corner.
At the corner he bumps his head on the cardboard. That settles that. He turns his attention to the towel instead and burrows nose-first into the folds, as if the way forward might be down.
SaveHis mother has been watching. She steps into the box, setting each paw down softly, and sniffs him over. Then she sniffs the towel too and lies down carefully, close enough to keep an eye on him.
She talks to him as she settles, in the short trills and chirps a mother cat saves for her kittens, with a purr running underneath. It may be the most comforting sound a cat can make.
SaveHer eyes are the other thing. Pale green and as round as saucers, they don't leave the kitten for long, except when she glances up at the person filming and gives them a slow blink, the way cats do with people they trust.
The kitten, meanwhile, has a new plan. He gets his feet under him, drops his head, and crosses the towel toward her one slow step at a time.
SaveWhen he gets close she stretches out a paw and rests it on him, steadying him the rest of the way. He pushes his face up into it. She licks him clean, and he settles against her and dozes off almost at once, because opening your eyes on the world is tiring work.
SaveHe doesn't stay put for long. A little later he is off across the towel again, and she lets him go, watching him and the room by turns. The room is quiet except for her purr and his thin little voice.
