The senior shelter cat who purrs like a pigeon

Anshu wanted a playful kitten. The cat who picked her family at the shelter was a senior with no teeth and a very loud purr. more

Anshu thinks of herself as a clingy cat mom. She lives in the DC area, where plenty of cats end up abandoned or left by the road, so her family decided to help and went to a shelter to adopt.

There they met Nugget, who had been found on the streets. An infection had cost him his teeth, and he was a senior, nothing like the kitten Anshu had pictured. None of that mattered once he saw them. He walked right up and started hugging, and they took him home that same day.

Her husband had doubts, since they had never had a pet and a senior cat seemed like a lot to take on. Nugget took to them right away. He's gentle and loving and wants to be near Anshu all the time. Other people interest him much less.

Then there's the purr. Nugget purrs almost all the time, and loudly, and people kept telling the family the sound has a name, trilling, which means he is thrilled. He sounds just like a pigeon. Some people hear a velociraptor, or a raccoon.

His favorite spot is the cabinet where the potatoes are kept. Every time Anshu opened it, he climbed in, so she gave that part of the cabinet to him. Now a few potatoes come along whenever the family travels, because they comfort him.

Forget the fancy cat tree. Nugget's idea of the good life is a dark cabinet, an oven mitt and a few potatoes. He also owns a straw hat, and he wears it.

He loves to cuddle, and he and his family are hard to pry apart. Anshu calls him her soulmate. Most cats meow. Nugget coos.
