Great Dane on door duty as the cat slips out

The front door is open, Jack the tabby cat is out on the porch, and a Great Dane named Max is standing in the doorway like a bouncer. more

Max and his sister Katie are Great Danes, and Jack is the cat who lives with them. Diane looks after all three, and at the moment that means trying to get a cat back into the house. Max goes no farther than the doorstep. He stands there, filling the whole doorway, and watches.

With Jack loose on the porch, Max plants himself in the open doorway.

That's a problem for Katie, who is stuck behind him and wants out. There is no going around a Great Dane who has decided to stand still. The second Max shifts to one side, Katie takes the gap and joins the others outside.

Jack, meanwhile, is busy exploring the porch. Diane calls him. He keeps exploring. So she picks him up and sets him down on the mat by the front door, and Jack turns around and walks off in the other direction.

Diane asks Max for a little help. Max is busy. He's watching over his sister and barking at something off in the distance, and the dogs stay right where they are.

Then Jack makes up his own mind. He heads back toward the door, the one place everyone wanted him, and finds a Great Dane standing in it. Diane asks Max to move. Max doesn't move, because his eyes are still on Katie.

It takes a few minutes. Max holds the doorstep a while longer, and then the dogs walk back inside on their own time. Katie heads for the sofa and makes herself comfortable.

One fan called Max a wonderful concierge, and the job title fits, even if he never once held the door for anyone. Others couldn't get past the house itself, and one admitted that if they lived somewhere that nice, they would never go outside. Jack, who spent all this time trying to stay out, might not agree.
