Squirrel helps himself to a trash can milkshake

Somebody in New York threw out a Shake Shack shake with the lid still on. A squirrel got to it first. more

The trash can is lined with a clear plastic bag. Inside sit a crumpled paper bag, a scrap of foil, a second cup and the prize, a paper cup with its lid on and a straw sticking up. The squirrel climbs right down in with it. There's nothing careful about him. He goes at the cup like he has done this before.

He starts at the lid, nose first. The straw is in his way, so he deals with it. A grip, a tug, and it goes flying off to the side. This is the move everyone remembers. Then it's just him and the shake.

A small crowd has gathered by now, phones up. When he gets to the shake, a cheer goes up with them, the kind a park gives a ballplayer. New York already had a famous rat with a slice of pizza. Now it has a squirrel with a milkshake. The only question left is which pigeon gets the burger.

One of the people filming has a warning for him. "Dude, you're going to get a tummy ache." He does not appear to mind. He has the whole shake to himself and a park full of new fans, and that will do.
