First snow day for four Bernese puppies
One more heavy snowfall, after Morgan had called the season over, gives four Bernese mountain dog puppies their very first powder. more
The pups are eight weeks old, and all four names start with R: Roosevelt, Rutherford, Regal and Royal. The spring snow is deep, and in they go, with Morgan standing close by.
SaveMorgan sums it up early. "There's seriously nothing cuter than seeing these puppies play in the snow." The pups get dotted with snowflakes and keep right on chasing each other. Their mother keeps watch over the whole litter.
SaveEight weeks old also means a big day. It is time for their first round of shots and a microchip each, so the pups get loaded into the car. "Hey, buddy. Here's Regal."
On the drive, Morgan talks over the puppy noise in the back seat and shares a few tips. Shots come at eight weeks, again at 12 and once more at 16. Until a puppy has all of them, keep the pup home and away from other dogs, because parvo is a real danger. Even a healthy, vaccinated dog can carry the virus, so skip the dog park and the random patch of grass where other dogs go.
At the clinic, the pups wait their turn in the car, and Morgan has a word with one of them. "I helped bring you into this world, didn't I? I did." A moment later: "You're all soaked, like you've been chewed on by your siblings."
SaveOne of the boys gets a nickname, lover boy. He's the only one who is easy to hold. "He literally is just a lump," Morgan says. "Look at his feet. You're gonna be a lump in front of somebody's fireplace."
Then a vet comes out and carries the puppies inside one at a time for a weigh-in, shots and a chip. Soon the whole litter is done.
Back home, the snow is still deep, and it makes for hard going at this size. The pups play in it anyway.
SaveLater, Morgan's Great Dane wades out to join them for one more romp. Then the whole wet crew heads inside, where it's warm.
